More Women More Miles: Getting Your Bike Ready for UNBOUND Gravel with Casey Wytaske (Episode 211)
This week on our More Women More Miles series, we are so lucky to be joined by bike mechanic extraordinaire Casey Wytske. Casey has years of experience working as a mechanic in the cycling industry, and also teaching courses on bike mechanics. In this hands-on session Casey goes over all of the things we need to know in order to get our bikes ready to take on UNBOUND Gravel, or any other gravel event. To start off, she goes over tire selection to maximize comfort, efficiency and safety, as well as tips on how to find the right tire pressure. Casey also goes over the essential tools you need in your bag for any gravel ride, and then dives into a step by step bike check, including how to check and top up sealant in tubeless tires. Spark the Fire with Michaela Thompson (Episode 210)
Our guest this week is Colorado-based cyclist Michaela Thompson, who joined us a couple of days before the kickoff of the Life Time Grand Prix at Sea Otter Gravel. Originally from Boulder, Michaela now lives in Durango CO. She talks about her upbringing in a family of athletes, and how she made her way from downhill ski racing to joining the cycling team at Boulder High School in her junior year. Michaela joined the Boulder Junior Cycling Club in 2019 where she dabbled in all disciplines of cycling, and qualified as a junior for Cyclocross Worlds in January of 2020. She tells us how that experience sparked a fire in her to compete at a high level in cycling, leading her to join a professional development team in Durango. Over the next couple of years she gained experience in the endurance cycling world, and eventually made her own race program as a privateer in 2024 where she finished 10th overall in the Life Time Grand Prix. Michaela also shares some of her goals and plans for the 2025 race season, which include a second year in the Grand Prix, as well as racing Brek Epic which starts the day after Leadville! Welcome to our 200th episode! This week Kathryn and Kristi are joined by a very special guest, Heather Jackson. A former professional triathlete, Heather has jumped with both feet into the world of off road racing, claiming impressive results in both gravel cycling AND ultra running. Heather grew up in an athletic family, and her early years in sport were spent on the soccer field and in the ice hockey rink. After her collegiate years playing ice hockey at Princeton, Heather quickly found her way into triathlon and never looked back. In her over 15 years as a professional triathlete Heather claimed 6 Ironman wins, 16 Ironman 70.3 wins, and finished in the top 5 at the Ironman World Championships 4 times. Heather talks about her transition from top Ironman pro to gravel racer and trail runner, and some of her highlights on the dirt so far including being part of the epic 9-woman sprint at Unbound in 2024. She also gives her advice for folks that may be pursuing both cycling and trail running this season.
