WALTER WAYGOOD IN CONVERSATION WITH BRIAN CARROLL

Walter Waygood studied Fine Art at Newport College of Art in the 1970s where he was introduced to the large format camera and, from that point onwards, has incorporated photography into his art, design and photomontage disciplines.

Waygood's work was inspired by the German portrait documentary photographer August Sander and the American photographers of the 1930’s Farm Security Administration. Here in Wales, he continues to be inspired by the landscape and people of his home environment Blaenafon, South Wales. His photography provides a commentary of working class life in the area during the 1970‘s. His interest in photography as a form of social commentary led him to make more political statements through his pictures during the miners strike of the 1980’s and he was one of the photographers selected as part of Ffotogallery's 'Valleys Project' in the 1980s.

His work is held in the collections of The National Library of Wales, National Museum Wales and The British Library.

ROO LEWIS IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG
LONDON, APRIL 2024

Ffoton talks with London-based commercial photographer Roo Lewis.

Memories of trips to Wales to visit his grandfather in Pembrokeshire had a lasting impact on Lewis - including those passing the vast steel works in Port Talbot located just off the M4 motorway. Now a busy professional photographer, Lewis has documented the town and people in recent years, creating an intimate portrait of the town, its landscape and eccentric characters – published in 2023 in his photobook 'Port Talbot UFO Investigation Club' by GOST Books.

STEVE BENBOW IN CONVERSATION WITH BRIAN CARROLL

Steve Benbow trained in photography under David Hurn on the original Newport Documentary Photography course in the mid-1970s, after which he was a founding member of the Ffotogallery in Cardiff, a founder of the respected London-based ‘Network’ Agency of photojournalists; and an international professional photojournalist for over twenty years working with photo agencies in London, Paris and New York.

Along with his wife Kate, a photo editor at The Times and US News and World Report, he returned to Wales and started the Photolibrary Wales for Wales-specific stock stills images; and then Video Wales for video production. Steve is now retired from photography but was one of the top names on Ffoton’s hit list of photographers to interview when planning for our website and podcast in mid-2014. Mission accomplished.

This is the final segment of three parts, and explores Steve’s return to Wales and forming the Photolibrary Wales - a stills stock agency specialising in providing images of Wales to commercial clients, his views on copyright, forming Video Wales in offering moving images and, finally, retirement from photography.

This is the second of three parts where Steve recalls a busy period in his career including being shot in Northern Ireland during the Troubles there. After relocating from the UK to New York in the USA where he undertook many big assignments - including his image of Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, for the cover of TIME magazine - he and Kate moved to Paris where he took on assignments across Europe for Press titles across the world. The couple then decided to move back to Wales in the UK where he focussed more on Corporate photography - all the while retaining copyright in his images and continued to build a valuable archive of his own images.
