The Large Catechism: The Lord’s Prayer: 5th Petition

    17.1.2026 | 54 min.
As it states in Genesis 6:5, the intentions and “thoughts of [our] heart[s] [are] only evil continually.” Without Christ’s forgiveness, we are sorely lost, thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought to think. As those who are redeemed, we cling to the promise of His mercy and go joyfully to Him in prayer with nothing but the certain knowledge of the forgiveness of sins. We receive this forgiveness on account of Christ, and it is on account of Him that we forgive others.

Rev. Samuel Bobby, pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lincoln, NE, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study the 5th Petition of the Lord’s Prayer.

The Large Catechism: The Lord’s Prayer: 4th Petition

    10.1.2026 | 57 min.
“Our daily bread” encompasses everything we need for our lives here on earth. We give thanks to the Lord for all He gives to sustain this life, and we seek His grace for continued provision. In this petition, Luther especially highlights the need for good government for the sake of peace and protection. The Lord provides for all people, even those outside the Christian faith, and we pray that the Holy Spirit will provide the Bread of Life for their salvation.

Rev. Jack Gilbert, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, Racine, WI, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study the 4th Petition of the Lord’s Prayer.

The Large Catechism: The Lord’s Prayer: 3rd Petition

    20.12.2025 | 56 min.
We seek God’s will, but the devil’s will is the exact opposite. The Lord desires us to have no other gods; the devil’s will is that we have MANY gods. We look to the Lord for the Gospel, faith, and the Holy Spirit as we realize that there is a battle raging. An unbeliever has no battle because the Word is not heard, but for the baptized there is a struggle. The struggle, however, is not more powerful than the resurrected Lord! He is our refuge, strength, and ever-present help in trouble. We come to Him in prayer and utilize His armor to stay steadfast in Christ. (Ephesians 6:10-18).

Rev. Dr. Brian Kachelmeier, pastor of Crown of Life Lutheran Church, San Antonio, TX, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study the 3rd Petition of the Lord’s Prayer.

The Large Catechism: The Lord’s Prayer: 2nd Petition

    13.12.2025 | 55 min.
We ask for God’s kingdom to come among us. Where you find the kingdom, there you find the King (Jesus). Where you find the King (Jesus), there you find the kingdom. We ask that He would give us His Holy Spirit to believe His Word. An earthly kingdom is found by the work of its people and by force. God’s kingdom is found by the work of God in Christ and by His grace. His kingdom is seen now by the Word, Baptism, and the Lord’s Supper. We anticipate beholding the kingdom that is yet to come, that we may keep our focus on what truly matters in this life!

Rev. Dr. Matthew Richard, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Minot, ND, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study the 2nd Petition of the Lord’s Prayer.

The Large Catechism: The Lord’s Prayer: 1st Petition

    06.12.2025 | 55 min.
God’s name is holy, and we are to proclaim His Word faithfully and live holy lives according to it. We not only watch our language but intentionally use our words to call upon God’s Name in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks. “Help us to do this, dear Father in heaven!” We ask the LORD to keep us from speaking unholy words that do not glorify Him. “Protect us from this, heavenly Father!” To hallow is to praise, magnify, and honor Him in word and deed.

Rev. Andy Wright, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, Topeka, KS, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study the 1st Petition of the Lord’s Prayer.
