- "I cannot debate this with you. There are no equations used for an analysis. It is simply a judgment call, implicitly based on intuition as to the expectations."
In 1996, while on vacation, Barry Sherman sat down and put down some of his thoughts on paper for the first time. He wrote what were to be the first chapters of an autobiography titled "A Legacy of Thoughts." At the end, he planned out several more chapters to come - with titles such as "The Insatiable Cartel" and "Going for the Kill" - but never got around to writing them. What remained was a single line, in which Barry promised "a lot more to come."
While Barry never got around to writing those chapters, he seems to have lived them. In the decades before the deaths of himself and his wife Honey, millions of dollars were loaned to friends and family members for various projects and Barry earned a reputation as one of Canada's most litigious men...

On Monday, January 15th, 2018, a month to the day after the bodies of Barry and Honey Sherman were found in their home, two Toronto homicide detectives walked into the head office of Apotex on Signet Drive. They were looking for anything - a note, a journal, medical records - that might show a man who was sick or depressed or otherwise planning something.
What they found, though, was an unfinished memoir written by the man at the center of this mystery, 75-year-old Barry Sherman. He'd written it years beforehand, while on vacation with his family. Detectives were hoping that it might provide an easier answer to their questions. Instead, what they had uncovered was a backstory that complicated things even further...

On the morning of Friday, 15 December 2017, police in Toronto were contacted by multiple people at a residence in North York. The calls came in just before noon, and were from the housekeeper who cleaned the home every Friday, a real estate agent that was selling the property, and a contractor who took care of the plants. They were sure that they had discovered the bodies of the homeowners, 75-year-old Barry Sherman and his 70-year-old wife Honey, in the basement near the indoor pool.
As investigators would soon learn, the Shermans were exorbitantly wealthy and had rubbed shoulders with some of the most influential and powerful Canadians for decades. But investigators were unable to determine whether they had been killed by someone else, or by someone much closer to home...

At 00:53 Coordinated Universal Time on September 22nd, 1979, an aging American satellite called Vela 6911 recorded a double flash of light somewhere over the southern Indian Ocean. That same night, President Jimmy Carter wrote in his diary that there was an indication of a nuclear explosion near South Africa, and that it was either South Africa, Israel using a ship at sea, or nothing.
The two leading suspects had every reason to be suspects. South Africa had been caught preparing a nuclear test in the Kalahari Desert two years earlier. Israel had an undeclared arsenal, a long-standing policy of never confirming it, and a secret military relationship with South Africa that, according to South African documents published decades later, had included discussion of nuclear-capable missiles. Yet the search for evidence was coming up empty...

In May 1969, Vela 6911 had been launched into the upper atmosphere to monitor a portion of the planet for any sign of a nuclear explosion. It was an Advanced Vela Satellite, carrying X-ray, gamma-ray, and neutron detectors. It was also armed with a pair of optical sensors called bhangmeters, which were named that almost as a joke, because 'you would have to be high' to believe they would actually work.
Well, over their lifespan, the bhangmeters had actually worked successfully. Of the 41 "double-flashes" that the Vela satellites recorded over their first decade of use, all had been confirmed as a nuclear explosion by other means, usually by detecting the radioactive debris afterward. But then on Saturday, 22 September 1979, at 00:53 Coordinated Universal Time, Vela 6911's two bhangmeters recorded a double flash over the southern Indian Ocean, somewhere between South Africa and Antarctica...
