#131: Jamie Smart - How Having a 100% Belief in Your Clients’ Innate Capacities Can Transform the Way You Work [REPOST]

    08.10.2026 | 2 t. 19 min.
As we wrap up The Coach’s Journey Podcast after seven years, we’re sharing some of our favourite episodes from the back catalogue…
Jamie Smart, Sunday Times best-selling author, speaker and coach, got to where he is today through a series of moments of profound realisation and insight. The first of which was a calling to public speaking even though he was terrified of it at the time.
In 2003, Jamie started the company Salad, and quickly grew a tribe of over 80,000 people who devoured his articles and personal development products. Salad soon became one of the world’s leading NLP product businesses but, despite its success, Jamie once again found himself looking for something more. In 2008, a series of significant insights brought him to a new paradigm, the principles of CLARITY®. He stopped teaching NLP, sold Salad, and never looked back.
Today, Jamie has five books to his name. He works with individuals and businesses helping them create the results that matter to them as well as running professional development workshops. He has appeared on Sky TV, the BBC, and in numerous publications including The Daily Telegraph.
In this episode, we talk about:
The two most valuable things that anyone can learn - the truth of how our experience is created and who we really are.
Why he recommends working with a package model over charging by the hour - how to avoid losing your business over night.
The breakthroughs in psychology that he believes are as significant as the discovery of germs were to medicine.
The five questions to ask yourself and your client at the beginning of a new engagement.
Plus, we find out about childbed fever in the 1800s and what we can learn from four-year-olds.

#130: Claire Pedrick – Cutting Through Complexity and Simplifying Coaching [REPOST]

    01.10.2026 | 2 t. 17 min.
As we wrap up The Coach’s Journey Podcast after seven years, we’re sharing some of our favourite episodes from the back catalogue…
Claire Pedrick was speaking at the ICF Conference in 2019 when a publisher approached her and said: “Have you got a book in you?”
That book is Simplifying Coaching, and in it Claire offers a rallying cry for filtering out the noise of the coaching industry and honing in on the very human essence of transformative conversations.
In this episode of The Coach’s Journey Podcast, Claire traces the steps that led her into a burgeoning coaching landscape around the turn of the century and reflects on the precious lessons learned from moments that sometimes felt like missteps.
She shines a light on the “guru-ing” and “pedestal-ing” that can lead to problematic power dynamics in coaching, and shares the foundational values such as equity and fairness that underpin the success of 3D Coaching and saw her recognised with the 2022 Outstanding Contribution to Coaching Award from Henley Business School.
Claire is a master of the art of communicating complicated things simply, but admits it took a long time to have the confidence to cut through complexity and offer straightforward truths when coaching or mentoring coaches.
Listening to her speak, you cannot fail to appreciate the fundamental importance of her approach, which is explained with refreshing clarity.
In this episode, we talk about:
Whether we have to be the things we want to develop in people
The impact of modelling the boundaries we set
The holy ground in the coaching space and how to interact with it
Being wise about how many coffees to have with someone and still call it work
Learning how to be silent and how to wait while coaching clients are doing good work
Claire also talks about how to value your time, how to balance delivery and business development, and the importance of – as coaches – telling the truth about ourselves.

    ABOUT CLAIRE PEDRICK
Claire Pedrick is, in her own words, a human who facilitates other people’s thinking. She is a business owner. A mother. A friend. A volunteer. An MCC Master Coach with over 13,000 hours of experience. And she is the author of Simplifying Coaching and host at The Coaching Inn podcast.
About these descriptions, Claire says: “All of these are true and each will impact how we start a conversation. With some definitions you might assign me power which I do not deserve.”
Claire established 3D Coaching in the 1990s to bring together the simplest and best learning from coaching, to support people in organisations to have more effective conversations with an edge. Coaching for more than 35 years, she believes that the essence of coaching is simple and that it takes time to learn to work that simply.
Claire’s current focus is on developing internal and external coaches through training, masterclasses and mentoring. Every so often she goes for a very long walk – in 2022 it was 600km on the Camino in Spain.

#129: Ruth Rochelle – Insight Seminars, Systems Theory and the Path to our Current Truth [REPOST]

    24.09.2026 | 2 t. 5 min.
As we begin to wrap up The Coach’s Journey Podcast after seven years, we’re sharing some of our favourite episodes from the back catalogue…
Ruth Rochelle’s life and career changed when, in 1979, she met Ariana Huffington and took part in the first Insight Seminar ever to happen in the United Kingdom.
Ruth describes this moment as her invitation into self-reflection, the start of her career, and the time when she started to become the leader in her own life. In Café Royal on London’s Regent Street, with 100 people – including some famous names – she had an experience she calls mindblowing and heart-opening, revealing deep truths that had previously been hidden from view.
In this episode of the Coach’s Journey Podcast, Ruth sheds light on the vast worlds of discovery that opened up to her following that first Insight Seminar, which propelled her into a career as a global facilitator and as a renowned expert on conscious leadership in teams and organisations.
Ruth tells host Joey Owen how her remarkable appetite for learning and exploration also led her to study Internal Family Systems, which now underpins her work as an accredited master executive coach, IFS practitioner, systemic team coach and coaching constellations practitioner.
In this episode, Ruth and Joey also talk about:
Psychosynthesis and other therapeutic models that are harnessed by coaches
How to shift from protective behaviours in order to stand up in your authenticity
The ripple effect and how it can amplify both our limiting patterns and our effective ones
The way systems theory can help us stay in balance and adapt to our current truth
Ruth ends the podcast with a truly vital message about the parts of ourselves that we bring to interactions with others and the roles we all have to play in taking humanity forward.

#128: Chris Joseph - How to Become an Overnight Success in 10 years: From Ponzi Scheme Ruin to Six-Figure Coaching Months [REPOST]

    17.09.2026 | 2 t. 2 min.
As we begin to wrap up The Coach’s Journey Podcast after seven years, we’re sharing some of our favourite episodes from the back catalogue…
Sat atop a Welsh mountain in 2007 in a moment of depression and despair, Chris Joseph had the first in a series of instances of clarity that would eventually lead him to coaching. On the brink of a meltdown, he knew his Ph.D. in Computational Mechanics was no longer serving him.
Buddhism, yoga and mediation became the elixir for him and soon he found he couldn't sleep with excitement at the discoveries he was making. His life changed when he trained to become a mindfulness teacher with Breathworks, and Chris went on to complete his Ph.D. and launch his first coaching practice. But it wasn't a success and in the end he gave it up.
His extraordinary journey includes a multitude of highs and lows, from making £10,000 a month in passive income to losing it all to a fraudulent trader. Now he’s back coaching and headed for a seven-figure year with his highly successful practice.
In this episode, we talk about:
Where his practice went wrong the first time round.
Why the inner work is so important - understanding that you can only take people as far as you can go yourself.
Why a true insight always comes packaged with an action - an ‘outsight’ or an ‘outer action’.
How to invite an individual to coaching - how to make it feel like a gift to the individual and not a request for yourself.
Alongside the practical we get into some big topics: death, impermanence, the importance of play and the effects of all these on our lives. And it is a total pleasure to be in a space with Chris' beautiful open-heartedness.

#127: Julie Starr – The World Works from the Inside Out [REPOST]

    10.09.2026 | 2 t. 22 min.
As we begin to wrap up The Coach’s Journey Podcast after seven years, we’re sharing some of our favourite episodes from the back catalogue…
Coaching found Julie Starr without her looking for it, and she started to practice coaching before she knew what it was.
As a project manager of large-scale change initiatives in big organisations, Julie was someone who people naturally turned to with problems – often complex, personal matters that required care and attention to their inner world.
Julie acquired skills to enhance her ability to perform this role; tools like neuro-linguistic programming helped her to navigate one-to-one work, and also prepared her for the future that awaited her.
At a time when coaching qualifications had yet to be developed, Julie began writing a book that would help people understand the one-to-one work she was doing. That book is The Coaching Manual and it is now in its fifth edition, having garnered critical acclaim from the likes of Sir John Whitmore, widely regarded as one of the founding figures of the coaching industry.
Julie, now an executive coach, mentor, writer and speaker, has since written two more best-selling books on coaching as well as two works of fiction, all of which are inspired by her belief in the interdependency of people, and by her passionate enquiry into the nature of reality. A self-described seeker, Julie’s journey of exploration through personal and professional development charts a fascinating course through the last three decades and is full of interesting insights and suggestions for coaches on their own journey.
In this episode, we also talk about:
Not allowing models and frameworks to become limiting factors in our work as coaches
The power of non-attachment and the importance of working joyfully
Staying true to ourselves, and resisting the temptation to climb a ladder that is against somebody else’s wall
How to charge what you would be delighted with but not amazed by
How to pursue the pathways that make sense to you in a turbulent, disorienting world
We also discuss the biggest challenge we face as coaches: the inner and outer work we have to do to get ourselves out of the way in conversations.
