Biathlon bronze medalist Kari Swenson was on a training run near Big Sky, Montana in the summer of 1984 when she encountered two men with malicious intentions. Kari had just made history with her biathlon relay team when she was abducted and held captive for 18 hours by two self-proclaimed survivalists who wanted to make her a “wife”. Father-son duo Don and Dan Nichols were the monsters who not only abducted Kari but also murdered her friend who was trying to rescue her.

Rachel O’Reilly was a 30‑year‑old mother of two when she was murdered in her home in Naul, Ireland, in 2004. The crime scene was staged to resemble a break‑in, with overturned furniture and scattered items, but investigators quickly noticed inconsistencies. Detectives soon uncovered the truth about what was happening in Rachel’s marriage to Joe O’Reilly, and as their suspicions grew, so did their case against him.

In August 2014, 19 year old Heather Mack was on vacation with her mother, Sheila von Weise in Bali, Indonesia. Little did Sheila know, Heather had purchased her boyfriend, 21 year old Tommy Schaefer, a plane ticket to Bali. When Schaefer arrived, the couple executed a plan they had been concocting: they were going to kill Heather’s mother to get her inheritance. After brutally murdering Sheila, they placed her body in a suitcase to try to conceal the crime, leading to this becoming infamously known as the Bali Suitcase Murder.

The West Memphis Three case remains one of the most debated criminal cases in modern U.S. history, marked by conflicting interpretations of evidence, questions about investigative methods, and ongoing disagreement about guilt or innocence. While Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr. were convicted in 1994, years of scrutiny have raised concerns about the reliability of key evidence, including Misskelley’s confession and disputed forensic findings. The emergence of alternative suspects and new DNA testing further complicated the case, leading to their release in 2011 through Alford pleas while maintaining their innocence. Ultimately, the case highlights broader issues within the justice system, including the risks of wrongful conviction, the influence of public perception, and the importance of thorough, unbiased investigations. As we conclude this case in its entirety, I want to remind you of the victims who don’t get a second chance and still need justice: Stevie Branch, Michael Moore and Christopher Byers.
