Destination Terror

Bolivia's North Yungas Road has a nickname it earned in full: the Road of Death. A single-lane ribbon of dirt and stone clinging to the Andes, with a wall of rock on one side and a two-thousand-foot drop into fog on the other — no guardrail, no shoulder, no mercy. It was carved out by prisoners of war in the 1930s, and for seventy years it killed by the hundreds, until it became the only road in Bolivia where you drive on the left, so you can watch your own wheels decide whether you live. But the people who bury their dead along it will tell you the danger isn't only the edge. It's what waits at the bends where the crosses cluster thickest — the women in the fog, standing where no living person ever would.



Tonight we drive it together. First a story: a young truck driver named Elías, one night, one old woman who needs a ride, and every warning his uncle ever gave him. Then the real history behind the fiction — the Chaco War, the unrecoverable bodies at the bottom of the gorge, the offerings made to a mountain that keeps a very exact ledger. As always, the story is invented. Everything underneath it is not. Keep to the left. Go slowly. And whatever you do — do not look over the edge.

In February 1945, close to a thousand Japanese soldiers were driven into a mangrove swamp on Ramree Island, off the coast of Burma. Almost none came out. The legend says saltwater crocodiles devoured them by the hundreds — a slaughter so infamous it landed in the record books as the worst animal attack in human history.

But is that what really happened?

Four thousand people are buried on a hill outside Peoria, Illinois, and most of them don't have names — just numbers, pressed into small flat stones. For eight years, every time one of them went into the ground, a man was there to cry.

He couldn't speak. Nobody ever learned his real name. The staff called him Old Book, after the only thing anyone knew about his past, and they loved him. He dug the graves of strangers and then wept for them under an elm tree at the edge of the field, because no one else was coming.

Then in 1910 they buried him — and roughly four hundred people watched him cry at his own funeral.

This week on Destination Terror, we're going to Peoria State Hospital, and it isn't the asylum story you're expecting. There were no cruel doctors here. No barbaric experiments. The man who ran this place took the bars off the windows and fought the Illinois legislature over the word "incurable." The horror on this hill isn't cruelty. It's grief — thousands of people who died unclaimed in a place that was genuinely trying, and went into the ground under a number anyway.

The Graveyard Elm. The coffin that came up empty. And a hospital superintendent who risked his entire scientific reputation to write down what four hundred people saw, for one reason: so somebody would remember the old man who cried at every funeral.
